Major Product Design Project: Initial Research

This week I am conducting some initial research on my major product design project, specifically on how to construct a lamp. What I wanted to do was to take apart a lamp, unfortunately I did not have the funds to buy a lamp this week. Instead I watched videos on how to build and deconstruct lamps.

DIY Desk Lamp with Colour Changing LED Light

In this video Brad shows how he used old wood from his studio to create the design for his desk lamp. He explains that he needed to leave enough space for his lamp and wires, which were made out of tin with open mitered frames that were 5x5 inch in size. This means that the corners of the materials were cut at an angle to be able to join them together. He used coloured epoxy resin for the light of the LED to shine through, since the material is translucent.

For the actual lamp he used a porcelain socket with a thread on adapter plate and screws to keep it in place. He pulled the wire through the adapter plate and attached it to the lamp socket by twisting the wire around the screws before attaching the socket onto the adapter plate. He pulled apart the wires to attach the light switch, advising to use a rocker switch for more stability instead of a rotary switch, however a rocker switch has no dimming function. He used a Wiz Color LED Light Bulb which has a colour change function through its own app and voice control through Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple's Siri. "If you're interested in deeper integrations with third-party products and services, or advanced features that can sync your lights with your TV or with your music, then you'll still need to spend up on something from Philips Hue, Lifx or Nanoleaf -- but for simple, voice-activated, color-changing light that you can control and program from your phone, these Wiz Connected bulbs will do the trick for a fraction of the cost." (Crist, 2020). I think this would be an interesting feature to add to my own designs, without increasing the price too much.
