Artist Research: Jeremy Cole

This post contains my research on the work of designer Jeremy Cole, his work is mostly inspired by plants and flowers.

The Aloe Bud lamp is made out of ceramic bone china and are both light and sculpture in one. 'The handcrafted porcelain petals on each fixture are carefully arranged to diffuse the interior light source in a wonderfully soft way.' (S-B Long Interiors, 2011). The lamps in this collection are versatile and fit well into luxury homes, wedding venues or even an office.

The flowers in the Cymbidium chandelier is made from porcelain. 'Not only admired for their contemporary style and timeless beauty, but also for the care and skill each handmade piece entails.' (Hotel Space Magazine, 2018). I like the hanging flower design on this one a lot and I think it could inspire some interesting designs for my own product design project. However, I will choose materials that are easier to manufacture and more affordable.

Another impressive piece made out of ceramic bone china. The frame is made from stainless steel and silicon fixings and light in the center. The design allows the light to travel through the leaves and come out diffused so it is not too bright. 'A pendant lamp handcrafted from bone china ceramic pieces, White Flax seems to be made of feathers—in fact, the piece looks like it might just fly away in a gentle breeze.' (Rodriguez, 2011).

I feel inspired by the designs of these lamps, but I do not see how I could incorporate similar material choices in my own project as they most likely would not work in rounder shapes and the light does not shine through the material, it only guides it. I appreciate the minimalism in Jeremy Cole's work, it is something that I would like to incorporate in my own work.
